Amsterdam by night

If you like Electronic Dance Music (EDM), you have probably heard of these names of DJs before. Because most of the popular EDM tracks you heard on the streets, playlists and radio are made by the Dutch-based producers. Or maybe you have seen them on the music festivals’ line-ups. It would not be wrong if we say Dutch DJs took over the electronic music world, especially in the past 5 years.

Here are the Top 10 DJs of 2018 according to DJMag’s ¨Top 100 DJs¨ votes *

  1. Martin Garrix (Dutch)
  2. Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike (Belgian)
  3. Hardwell (Dutch)
  4. Armin van Buuren (Dutch)
  5. David Guetta (French)
  6. Tiesto (Dutch)
  7. Don Diablo (Dutch)
  8. Afrojack (Dutch)
  9. Oliver Heldens (Dutch)
  10. Marshmello (American)

There must be a reason behind this 70% rate of Dutch takeover. Could it be something about Netherlands?

EDM is not a very old music genre. About 20 years ago, it was almost impossible to hear this music outside of some of the underground nightclubs in the USA. Throughout the years, EDM started to engage with other genres (such as pop music) and with some vocalists and became more popular and went worldwide. In the beginning of 2000s, some countries in Europe has seen the opportunity of this rising demand for EDM and new music festivals have emerged (today we know them as Tomorrowland, AMF, Untold etc.)

Europe has always loved EDM since the day it has been popular. And it has been the location for EDM lovers from around the world to unite just like the USA. Unity is one of the strongest features of EDM’s spirit, because there is no other way to see people of different nations come together in peace outside the festivals. Because there is an open-minded world in there. Maybe that’s why EDM has been very acceptable in Netherlands.

Dutch people see this spirit of EDM not only as an emotional benefit but also an opportunity for music industry which is very appreciated. EDM is more than a music genre for them. So that, it is not so difficult to be an event organizator, a producer or a DJ. Even the Dutch King listens to EDM and supports the events in Netherlands.

Although Dutch people consider EDM as a serious industry, you can see in nightclubs, festivals and events that they love to do this. A DJ can play for hours on a stage, but he or she never gets tired because the passion is real. It is the same for the fans, party never stops for them. It is a fact that it doesn’t matter if you’re from Netherlands or not, you can always be a part of this journey. I use the word ‘journey’ because it really takes you to somewhere else out of the world.

One thing about Netherlands other than being uniting, it is also inviting. They don’t care about your age, gender, race and so forth. The only thing they care about is if you are as open-minded as them. So that you’ll see every side of this music’s characteristics. It is really worth to experience.

In such field, it is not very difficult to involve to this community. Whether you are a participant or a DJ or a producer, you are supported and loved in Netherlands. They always give hand for you to contribute and join themselves. When their only concern is about making this community go bigger, you will always be invited.

The Dutch DJs that I mentioned above, they were the pioneers of this EDM community. In 2000s and in 2010s, they were trying to spread this music to the whole world with their unique styles. With the big support they got from Netherlands, it was not something unexpected to see them in the international festivals and clubs and world tours. As their success is approved by the audience, Dutch people keep supporting the artists. And today we still see the success.

The country of DJs and producers: Netherlands. If you want to be a DJ or a producer, Netherlands will be your dream workplace. You’ll see how things are going to be very exciting and full of opportunities. Maybe you are now a producer who is trying to create beats and stuff in your bedroom with a computer. Go bigger and dream bigger, be a part of the Dutch EDM community and let your dreams come true!
